India Alerts Pakistan of Possible Flood Under Indus Waters Treaty
India has formally issued a flood warning to Pakistan under the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), highlighting the risk of a major flood in the Tawi River near Jammu. The alert was conveyed by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad on August 24 at 10:00 AM.
Interestingly, this warning comes despite India suspending its participation in the IWT earlier this year, raising questions about the future of water-sharing cooperation between the two countries.
The development coincides with a period of heightened diplomatic tensions. Recently, India expelled Pakistani nationals, shut down the Wagah-Attari border, and withdrew the SAARC visa exemption facility.
Meanwhile, Pakistan had earlier approached the Court of Arbitration over India’s construction activities on the western rivers, a move that further strained relations.
The latest flood alert indicates that, despite the ongoing disputes, the mechanisms of the IWT remain partially active, particularly in the case of emergency notifications.
