Pakistan’s Power Generation Increases by 8% in August 2025

Higher Output and Rising Demand

Pakistan generated 14,218 GWh of electricity in August 2025, which is 8% higher compared to 13,180 GWh in August 2024. The increase shows stronger demand and signs of improving economic activity.

On a monthly basis, production was also up by 1% compared to July 2025.

For the first two months of FY26, total electricity generation reached 28,341 GWh, a small increase from 28,060 GWh in the same period last year.

Why the Increase?

Experts say the jump in August came mainly due to:

Hotter weather, which pushed up electricity demand.

A strong rise in coal-based power generation.

Cost of Power Generation

While production increased, the average cost of power rose by 3% compared to last year.

August 2025: Rs. 7.7/kWh

August 2024: Rs. 7.5/kWh

However, compared to July 2025 (Rs. 7.8/kWh), the cost actually fell by 1%.

Energy Mix in August 2025

Here’s how different sources contributed to total generation:

Hydropower: 38.8%

RLNG (Regasified LNG): 15.3%

Nuclear Power: 15.1%

Wind Energy: 3.6%

Solar Energy: 0.7%

Hydropower led the way due to strong seasonal water inflows. Renewable sources like wind and solar, however, still play a small role in Pakistan’s energy supply.
