Pakistan Railways to Outsource Passenger Trains via Open Auction
Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi has announced that Pakistan Railways is making progress despite limited resources. He credited this success to strong planning and commitment. The minister also assured that the public will soon notice clear improvements in railway services.
Passenger Trains to Be Outsourced
In a high-level meeting at the Railways Headquarters, the minister approved several reforms. The most important step is outsourcing passenger trains through open auctions. Current contracts will also be reviewed under this new system.
A special committee has been formed to revise the annual revenue targets for trains.
Safety Department Upgraded
To improve passenger safety, the Safety Department has been upgraded to the level of a Directorate. More officers and staff will be added to strengthen its operations.
Better Facilities for Staff
The minister reviewed the conditions of rest houses for guards and drivers, calling them the backbone of Railways. He ordered immediate upgrades at Rohri, Khanpur, and Khanewal rest houses, including:
Air-conditioning
Kitchens
Shared dining halls
Freight and Online Booking
On freight operations, the minister expressed satisfaction with progress. He confirmed that 295 new freight wagons will be added by March 30.
He also announced that freight booking will fully shift to an online system next week to ensure transparency and efficiency.
New Coaches for Passengers
For passenger services, new developments include:
Shalimar Express to receive brand new AC Standard and AC Parlor coaches.
Lahore–Rawalpindi railcars to get refurbished coaches by November 11.
