The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has strongly refuted claims that mobile operator Jazz overcharged its customers by more than Rs. 6.58 billion during the financial year 2023-24.

According to official sources, PTA submitted a detailed clarification report to the Prime Minister’s Office, confirming that all tariff changes were made strictly under the approved regulatory framework. The authority stressed that the allegations circulating on social media were baseless propaganda aimed at damaging PTA’s credibility.

🔹 “There has been no violation of the approved tariff structure. All tariff adjustments were approved by the authority,” the report stated.

PTA also highlighted that the audit observations regarding tariff changes had already been approved and verified through supporting records shared with the relevant authorities.

Background of the Controversy

The issue gained traction after an audit report alleged that Jazz charged customers beyond the permitted tariff margin, collecting an additional Rs. 6.58 billion during 2023-24. The report noted that Jazz was allowed to increase tariffs by 15% on a quarterly basis, but allegedly exceeded that limit.

Senate Committee’s Involvement

The Senate Standing Committee on IT & Telecom, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan, has taken notice of the matter. The PTA Chairman has been summoned for a briefing on August 25, 2025, at the Parliament House, where the committee will demand clarity on PTA’s role in consumer protection and fair tariff regulation.

PTA maintains that its regulatory practices remain transparent, documented, and fully compliant with the law.
